Surg. Lt. Cdr. Charlotte Griffiths RN WHY TALL SHIPS? I first sailed on a Tall Ship vessel when I was 18 years old, I was quickly hooked! I found the environment so unique and was amazed how much we all learnt – and it wasn’t just sailing. That first voyage certainly inspired me to pursue a career at sea. Since then I have sailed many times as a Deckhand and Watch Leader. Every voyage is different, however seeing first hand how the voyage helps develop our young people, breaks down barriers and builds confidence is truly inspiring. When the opportunity arose for me to join the trustees I was keen to bring my experience from the vessels to the board room. BACKGROUND Whilst studying medicine at the University of Newcastle, I decided to join the Royal Navy. I have since had an exciting and varied career, serving both ashore and afloat. My deployments included time in the Gulf assisting to train the Iraqi Navy, visiting the Falklands and transiting through the Patagonian Canal into the Pacific Ocean. During these deployments I was the sole doctor onboard. I have now completed my GP training and am currently the Principle Medical Officer at HMS EXCELLENT.
